区别一：含义不同
1、a number of表示大量的，许多的，充足的的意思。
2、the number of表示...的数量，...的数量的意思。
区别二：谓语不同
1、a number of 意思是“一些，若干”(= some)，后面的谓语动词用复数形式。
2、the number of作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
区别三：用法不同
1、a number of表示“许多”，相当于 many，修饰可数名词复数，number前可用large，small等修饰，以表示程度。
2、the number of表示“……的数量”，中心词是number。
A number of priceless works of art were stolen from the gallery.
美术馆中许多价值连城的艺术品被盗。
A large number of people are going abroad to study.
很多人打算出国学习。
A small number of forged tickets are in circulation.
有一小部分假入场券在流通。
The number of students in our school is 3000.
